Please see work&labour news&research for current IR/HR stories
Monica Hypher is the recipient of the Dean's Student Life Award
We are excited to announce that Monica Hypher is the recipient of the 2013 Dean's Student Life Award. The students at the Centre for Industrial Relations & Human Resources put forward the idea for the nomination which everyone at the Centre supported wholeheartedly. Monica, after 30 years of providing wonderful student care & library service at the CIRHR, has won this prestigious award. Congratulations Monica – we are all so very proud! Some quotes from Monica’s nomination letters:
“She has made an outstanding contribution to research and excellence at the University of Toronto through her work developing online and print special collections and the course support she provides faculty and instructors.”
“Monica is the go–to–person because if she doesn’t know the answer she will find the answer. She is approachable, humorous, concerned, knowledgeable and always willing to make the extra effort that goes beyond duty into caring about that particular individual at that particular time. She practices what one could think of as “micro happiness” for a macro effect.”
“Monica developed strong connections to the students. Even decades later many alumni single her out as the person who helped them throughout the graduate program.”
Rachel Aleks Wins the Susan C. Eaton Scholar-Practitioner Research Grant for 2013
Rachel Aleks, PhD candidate, Centre for Industrial Relations & Human Resources, has been chosen as the winner for the Susan C. Eaton Scholar-Practitioner Research Grant for 2013 to fund additional research on “Union Characteristics and Tactics in Organizing Campaigns” and “Youth Attitudes Toward Labor Unions”.
“Susan Eaton was truly the embodiment of a “practitioner’s scholar.” Through her unique combination of research, teaching, and practice, she personified one of LERA’s founding principles—emphasizing the value of bringing together the academic and practitioner communities in our field. Each year, the grant and award is given to support a LERA member who is doing promising and relevant research consistent with the values and principles that best honor her legacy. That your proposal was chosen for this year’s Award speaks highly of your work and demonstrates the Committee’s belief in the importance of your research.”
